When she was sworn-in, November 2012 as the first female president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, following a successful but controversial national election held in September of the same year, Ibinabo Fiberesima had promised to revamp the troubled guild and restore its lost glory.
Six months after she made that heart-warming promise, the embattled president can look back today and claim with certainty that she has fulfilled her promise.
“Much as we were faced with great challenges, I have never been deterred from moving the guild forward within the last six months in office,” Ibinabo stated last weekend in Lagos.
Enumerating some of the major achievements her administration has recorded, Ibinabo said she has been able to unite all warring factions within the guild, acquire an 18 sitter bus for the guild, introduce an inter-ethnic cultural festival (drama, dance and poetry) among the state chapters, and commence a health management plan/insurance scheme for members of the guild.
“We’ve also introduced a lifestyle benefits discount for members on travel, holidays. Interestingly, we are in talks with NBC and the Nigerian Copyright Commission on residual payments to actors in Nigeria. We are also in the process of getting legislation to guide and protect actors,” Ibinabo added.
Speaking further on her immediate plans for the guild, the ex-beauty queen said, “We want to commence training and retraining of members in all categories. We have plans of organizing the first ever AGN Screen Actors Award, and to provide standard contract for members with the producers. ”
