Resident doctors end strike

The president of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr Ismail Lawal, has told his members to suspend the three-day warning strike and resume work immediately. Dr Lawal made this announcement while addressing the press at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) on Friday. According to NARD president, the three-day warning strike was to express the association’s dissatisfaction towards the inadequate 2013 budgetary allocation for the residency training of its members. He, however, noted that during the strike action, machineries were put in place to ensure that cases of emergency in all centres were adequately attended to. While bemoaning the danger in healthcare system if issues of resident training are taken with levity, Dr Lawal explained that residency training is the only training that develops specialised skills and knowledge in the various specialist fields which invariably ensure the accessibility of specialised care for the poor and average Nigerian. courtesy: Nigerian Tribune
