Egyptian forces clash with militants

An Egyptian man walks past a torched and vandalised police station on 24 August, 2013 in the Kerdasah neighbourhood of Giza, on the outskirts of Cairo, that was attacked on 14 August 14.A number of police officers died when this police station in Kerdasah was set on fire last month

Egyptian security forces have clashed with militants after entering a town on the outskirts of Cairo, reports say.

They went into Kerdasah shortly before 05:30 local time (03:30 GMT) to target "criminal and terrorist hotbeds", officials told Mena news agency.

One member of the security forces was killed in clashes, state media say.

Eleven police officers were killed at a police station in Kerdasah last month, weeks after the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in July.

Security forces were searching homes in Kerdasah for members of Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood movement, residents told the BBC.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville, who was in Kerdasah last night, said the mood in the town before security forces moved in was defiant with thousands of people attending a pro-Morsi rally amid shouts of "Down with Sisi", referring to the head of the army.

The authorities had promised to respond to the deadly attack on the police station in August and, according to state media, Assistant Interior Minister for Central Security Maj Gen Ashraf Abdullah met troops shortly before the mission began.

After performing dawn prayers, the troops began taking their positions in armoured vehicles ready for the start of the operation, Mena reported.

In a separate incident on Thursday, reports said part of the Cairo metro was disrupted as two bombs were discovered at Hilmiyat al-Zaytun station.

At least 1,000 people - including about 100 police officers - have died in unrest following President Morsi's removal from power. The deadliest incidents took place when security forces moved in to disperse two pro-Morsi sit-ins in Cairo last month.

Kerdasah, known for producing and selling textiles, is 14km (8.7 miles) from Cairo.

Residents were quoted on Wednesday saying they did not trust police: "We know they will come to arrest people we know and respect whom they blame for the violence that we know was done by outsiders, not by our respectable sheikhs," Ahmed Aly told Reuters news agency.

Egyptian forces arrested dozens of residents during a raid on Monday on pro-Morsi supporters in the town of Delga, Minya province, about 300km south of Cairo.

Herat attack: Afghanistan Taliban target US consulate

Two Afghan police and one security guard were killed in the dawn assault, along with four attackers. The US consulate said its staff were safe.

The Taliban said they carried out the attack, which began with a huge blast at the compound gates, sparking a gun battle near consulate buildings.

Attacks continue despite the planned withdrawal of foreign troops in 2014.

Seventeen civilians, including women and children, were injured in the Herat attack.

Herat sits close to the Iranian border on a vital trade route across southern Afghanistan and it has been relatively peaceful in recent years.

The US consulate in Herat was opened just four years ago in a former five-star hotel.

The BBC's David Loyn in Kabul says this attack - carried out in the shadow of the anniversary of 9/11 - is a demonstration of the ability of insurgents still to disrupt Afghanistan 12 years after the US toppled the Taliban.

In violence elsewhere, a truck bomb exploded near government offices in the volatile south-eastern province of Paktika, injuring several Afghan security personnel.

'Extensive damage'

The force of the explosions in Herat left the road badly damaged and pieces of twisted metal and rubble could be seen in the vicinity of the consulate, reports say.

An Afghan army spokesman told the BBC that a huge truck bomb damaged the outer defences of the US consulate, allowing the attackers to breach the perimeter and shoot at the consulate buildings.

"A truck carrying attackers drove to the front gate, and attackers, possibly firing rocket propelled grenades and assault rifles, commenced attacking Afghan Protective forces on the exterior of the gates," US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters.

"Shortly after, the entire truck exploded, extensively damaging the front gate [to the consulate]," she added.

The gunfire continued for some time, reporters at the scene said.

The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) tweeted at 04:00 GMT that the consulate was secure "with all enemy forces being killed". Isaf and Afghan National Security Forces were at the scene, it added.

Peter Bezaorowajnyj, who works in Afghanistan, told the BBC he could see smoke from the explosion from the roof of his building.

The explosion "rocked the building I am staying in", he said.

Earlier this month Taliban targeted the Torkham US base in eastern Afghanistan, sparking a lengthy gun battle in which three insurgents were killed.

Four ‘rebel’ governors meet Jonathan

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan

Four of the seven aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party governors on Tuesday met with President Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja to protest ‘the belligerence’ of the party’s National Chairman, Dr.  Bamanga Tukur.

Before the meeting, Jonathan had held  two separate closed doors meetings  with two elders of the PDP and three governors  sympathetic to the  Tukur-led  faction over the crisis rocking the party.

The elders  were  Dr. Ahmadu Ali, a  former chairman of the PDP; and  Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, an  ex-military President.

The three governors that met with him earlier on Tuesday were  Godswill Akpabio(Akwa Ibom), Gabriel Suswan (Benue); and  Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta).

The PUNCH also  gathered that the  the four ‘rebel’ governors – Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and  Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) – reiterated their demand for the recognition of  their Rivers State counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi, as  the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

They were also said to have asked the President to ask Tukur to halt plans to take over the party’s structure in their various states.

These, among other things, were parts of demands tabled before the President at a closed-door meeting   held at the First Lady’s wing of the Presidential Villa.

It was also gathered that those at the meeting commended elders of the party for their various efforts at resolving the crisis that led to the factionalisation of the ruling party. They equally commended the President for his disposition towards the various peace moves.

Three of the aggrieved governors who were absent from the meeting were  Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano); and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara).

It was gathered that  Kwankwaso and Ahmed  travelled  out of the country.

A-yet-to-be verified information claimed that the governors equally asked the President to replace Vice-President Namadi Sambo with one of them as a pre-condition for their support should he decide to seek  a second term in 2015.

A source privy to the meeting said, “The aggrieved  governors are ready for peace;  that is why they   attended  the meeting in the first place. However, it is doubtful if any progress can be made if unconstitutional actions taken by the Tukur-led National Working Committee of the party  are not reversed.”

Jonathan had earlier on Tuesday met first with Suswan, Akpabio and Uduaghan  as well as Babangida and Ali over the crisis in the party.

Suswan avoided State House correspondents outright while Akpabio and Uduaghan who were approached declined comments on their way out of the Villa.

Ali and Babangida,  who   are among the seven PDP elders brokering peace between the Tukur-led PDP and the Abubakar Baraje group known as the New PDP,    arrived  at the Villa around 1pm and left after  about an hour.

Since the PDP split on August 31, 2013, Jonathan has met with several stakeholders in the party, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is also one of the seven  elders of the party.

He has also met with   Aliyu , Kwankwaso, Nyako  and   Ahmed,  who are backing the New PDP.

Meanwhile, the New PDP has said its leaders refused to be part of the post convention dinner held at the Presidential Villa on Monday because they  considered it as a waste of resources.

It said there was no need for the dinner because  there were other serious national issues that needed urgent attention.

In a  statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, the New PDP said national issues like the ongoing strike by the university teachers  ought to attract urgent attention of President Jonathan.

It said,  “To us, that dinner was organised to give credibility to the charade that was called PDP Special National Convention.

“As a serious group, we cannot be a party to such squandermania while Nigerian masses are wallowing in abject poverty and our children kept at home instead of being in school because the Federal Government could not meet the  lecturers’  demands.

“We wish to have nothing to do with such, which we considered as wasting of public funds and such trivialities associated with Tukur and his leadership – which explains why he must be kicked out of the national secretariat of the party.

“We cannot be a party to such a gathering while the PDP family is facinga  serious crisis that if not checked would dim the party’s chances of winning future elections. This is a sign of a man chasing a rat while his house is on fire.”

It also  also urged Tukur  and  his team  to stop making   statements capable of derailing the efforts of the elders committee of the party under the leadership of  Obasanjo to restore normalcy and unity amongst PDP members.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the Tukur-led PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, said, “We will not exchange words with our aggrieved brothers;  reconciliation is ongoing and  our focus is to redouble the efforts to ensure that our  members rededicate  themselves to the party and for our elected and appointed representatives to work harder now more than ever in satisfying the yearnings of Nigerians.”

Also on Tuesday, the Tukur-led faction   initiated a fresh contempt suit before the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, against  leaders of the  Baraje-led  group  for allegedly violating an order of the court.

The   suit is different from the one  the Tukur group  filed before a  Federal High Court, Abuja, against the same   set of defendants, including Baraje and the  National Secretary of the New PDP, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

The  fresh   suit listed the  alleged contemnors as  a former National Deputy Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Sam Jaja; Maode Hiliya, Timi Frank, Mrs. Binta Koje, Mallam Nasir Issa, Eze, Aliyu Wadada and Mallam Tanko Gomna.

Protest against Olu of Warri rages, Uduaghan intervenes

Scene of the protest

The Delta State Governor, Dr.  Emmanuel Uduaghan,   has appealed to thousands of Itsekiri  protesting the bid by their  monarch to jettison their  traditional beliefs  to remain calm, saying he was already meeting with stakeholders   to resolve the matter.

Uduaghan, who arrived the palace at about 3.45pm on Sunday, was met by the surging protesters, who appealed to him to mediate in the crisis.

An online news portal, THE WILL, reported that the   governor, was   allowed into  the palace without  his security aides,  came out after about 15 minutes to address the protesters.

Urging  the protesters  to exercise restraint,  he  said he had discussed with   Atunwase II, the chiefs and the youth  over the issue and expressed  gratitude to the protesters for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner.

The palace of the Olu of Warri was barricaded for the third day by the protesters who erected canopies in the front gate.

Some women and youths also erected canopies by the side fence of the palace where they cooked and danced.

Itshekiri masquerades were also brought in to spice up  the protest as they banged   the gate of the palace while the protest lasted.

The protest was sparked off by the monarch’s decision to, among others,  abolish the ancient Itshekiri masquerades which are paraded during traditional festivals.

While the monarch was inside the palace as the scene was playing out, only a few chiefs, leaders and youth representatives were allowed to enter the palace by the protesters.

Several meetings were held by groups who adjourned and  reconvened after some hours. The groups were  said to have also met   with the monarch.

Atunwatse II  had few days ago declared in a document titled  “The New Order of Iwere Kingdom,” that the “Ogiame” title which had been in existence for over 500 years would cease to exist following the recent consecration of the kingdom to God.

“Ogiame” means “King of the River,” according to the history behind the Itsekiri throne.

The monarch, in the document, said he had renounced his allegiance to the “Umalokun” (goddess of the sea), land and sky as well as  the “Ogiame” title to which his ancestors had pledged allegiance to “Umalokun” and other deities.

PDP’ll lose Osun without my support –Oyinlola

Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola

Former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party in the state will, without his support, lose the 2014 governorship election.

Oyinlola, who is one of the leaders of the new faction of the PDP, said this on Sunday while addressing party supporters at the Odo Otin Grammar School, Okuku.

The supporters had thronged Okuku, Oyinlola’s hometown, to welcome him back home, in defiance of an order by the PDP Elders Committee in the state that any PDP member who attended any meeting called by Oyinlola or the ‘new PDP’ would be sanctioned.

The former governor described Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, whom he constantly referred to as a former PDP chairman, as a dictator who ran the affairs of the party without recourse to the provisions of the constitution.

He said that his crisis with Tukur started immediately after they both assumed office in March 2012. He explained that Tukur appointed a chief of staff and media aides which was against what the PDP constitution stipulated.

He added that his stand as the National Secretary of the party that those aides should not be paid from the party’s purse triggered off the crisis.

He also said that President Goodluck Jonathan victimised him because of his relationship with Gen. Ibrahim Babangida who he said he had known for over 30 years.

He said, “I am happy that despite the threat that you should no longer associate with me, you still come out in large number to honour me. God will honour you all. Without my support, it will be impossible for the PDP to win the governorship election in Osun State.

“They can only go round to campaign with what they intend to do but if I follow them I will tell the people what I have done in the state.”

Oyinlola explained that the manipulation of the delegates’ list for the mini convention led to the breakaway of the new PDP faction because some of the governors were stabbed in the back.

He said that the faction had booked the Sheu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, for an imaginary wedding reception for them to be able to use the venue to announce the emergence of the ‘new PDP’.

“They would have sealed the place off the way they did to our party secretariat, but we beat them to it by booking the venue for wedding without making our intention known,” he said.

Asked if he could join the All Progressive Congress, Oyinlola said, “ I will go elsewhere if I am no longer wanted.”

Meanwhile, a member of the Elders Committee of the PPDP, Chief Abiola Ogundokun, on Sunday described Oyinlola’s action of joining a factional group led by Abubakar Baraje as a betrayal of trust.

Ogundokun, who spoke with journalists in Osogbo, the state capital, berated Oyinlola for “rocking the boat of the party.”

He said that the former governor walked out of the party’s mini convention in Abuja after pretending that he was going to the toilet.

Kenya offers 46 oil blocks to Nigerians

Kenya offers 46 oil blocks to Nigerians

Kenya has offered interested Nigerians its 46 newly-discovered oil blocks for development.

Minister of Petroleum Resources Diezani Alison-Madueke broke the news at the weekend in Nairobi, Kenya when addressing reporters.

According to her, the offer was part of the outcome of the dialogue preceding the Nigeria-Kenya Investment Forum held on Friday in Kenya.

Besides the offer of oil wells, Kenya also sought Nigeria’s assistance in the formulation of right policies and framework to manage the sector.

The minister said: “It is well-known that Kenya recently discovered hydo-carbon reserves and is keen to move aggressively in terms of exploration activities.

“The Kenyans feel that as a sister African country, Nigeria, having many years of oil exploration and production, it only makes sense that we exchange agreement in cooperation to hand over knowledge, capabilities and experience learnt.

“They seek the templates we have formulated, including policies, processes and a sort of templates that form the Petroleum Industry Bill, among others.”

She went on: “We also looked at the areas surrounding Nigeria’s investments possibilities where we think Nigerian businessmen and women could come into the oil and gas sector in Kenya.

“They are very keen that Nigerian operators in the upstream, midstream and downstream service sectors of the oil and gas industry look to Kenya as a burgeoning frontier for investments in the oil and gas sector.

“They are also very keen that we support them in setting up the right framework, policies and processes and technology to help them drive the exploration activities.”

Among the seven Memoranda of Understanding and Bilateral Agreements signed by both countries, she said, included oil and gas, which spelt out details of the co-operations.

The CEO of Forte Oil and Zenon Oil, Mr. Femi Otedola, Chairman of Honeywell Group, Oba Otudeko, prominent bankers and investors, Jim Ovia and Tony Elumelu, were in the Nigerian delegation to the forum.

Malawi’s Saintfiet commends Nigeria

Tom Saintfeit

The Technical Adviser of the Flames of Malawi, Tom Saintfiet, has commended Nigeria’s Super Eagles for qualifying for the last stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Saintfiet told newsmen shortly after his side lost 2-0 to Nigeria in the World Cup match played in Calabar.

He said, “We came with a game plan to make the first half goalless. But when Nigeria scored in the 45th minute, we knew it was over. Our plan was to come out and attack the Eagles in the second half but Nigeria took the game to us in the second half.”

Saintfiet said that in spite of the loss, his players did well and deserved to be praised.

“Actually as a coach, I came here to win the match but Nigeria carried the day afterwards. I wish Nigeria well in the final qualifying matches and pray that they qualify for the World Cup,” he said.

The Flames Captain, Banda Davie, said they were disappointed at their loss to the Eagles.

“We actually prepared very well for this match. Nigeria came out strongly to carry the day,” he said.

Eagles returnee striker, Emmanuel Emenike, scored Nigeria’s first goal in the 45th minute while Victor Moses scored the second through a penalty in the 51st minute. Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi, said that although his players did not play well in the first half, they picked up in the second half and won the game.

“It was a good game, mostly in the second half. In first half, my team had no mobility but in the second, we played high speed game and won the match. Malawi is a good team but we did not allow them to play. My players’ ability to recover loose balls quickly was good.

“I have no preference to play any country in the final round of the qualifier, wherever we find ourselves, we will play our game,” Keshi said.

Oyedepo opens Abuja Winners Chapel

Founder, Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, a prolific writer

The Federal Capital Territory was agog on Saturday when Bishop David Oyedepo inaugurated one of the biggest branches of The Living Faith Church, popularly referred to as Winners Chapel in Life Camp District in Abuja.

The church, which accommodates over 4,000 worshipers every Sunday, was built in less than one year.

Thousands of worshipers gathered to witness the unveiling of the cathedral, which is estimated to be over N300m.

Oyedepo, who was represented by a Senior Pastor, Dele Bamgboye, revealed that with the dedication of the branch, Life Camp and its environs were set to experience a spiritual rebirth.

He therefore charged the congregation to always have faith in God, as only Him can supply all their needs.

Top clergymen and some senior  government officials in Abuja and in other northern states under the Winners Chapel family, were on ground to witness the official inauguration.

Resident Pastor of the church and younger brother to Bishop Oyedepo, Gideon Oyedepo, told journalists that the church project gulped millions of naira

CAN kicks as Borno plans to demolish churches

CAN President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor

The   Borno State Government has begun moves to demolish over 20 churches and schools built by them.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that the state government would embark on the demolition exercise any moment from now.

Sources hinted that the state government had already dispatched a notice to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and owners of farmlands in the area intimating them of the plan to acquire the site for a 1000 housing units.

A leaflet from the office of the Borno State Ministry of Lands and Survey dated August 20 and signed by one Musa Ummate (O/C Land Administration) on behalf of the commissioner was obtained by journalists on Sunday in Abuja.

The leaflet is titled, ‘Notice of acquisition and assessment/valuation of structures on proposed site for 1000 Housing Units along Gubio Road Highway.’

It reads: “I am directed to refer to you farmers and holders of structures on the proposed site for caption matter above and regret to inform you that the Executive Governor has, on the power conferred on him by Section (2)b of the Land Use Act 1978, directed through high powered committee on Construction Ref. no: HPCC/2500/HE/S/TEC/1 to notify you of his intention to acquire your farm lands and assessment/valuation of the structures on the proposed site situated along Gubio Road, Maiduguri.

“The acquisition is necessary in view of requirements of the land acquisition by the state government for overriding public interest to construct a Housing Esate. The affected farmers and holders of structures are to take note and appear on site for the above exercise, please.”

But a CAN source said, “Over 20 churches and many schools will be affected. The parcels of land on which the churches were built were bought from farmers and have the authority and certificate of the District Head in Maiduguri popularly called Bulama. The land was not under the ministry when it was bought.”

When contacted, the General Secretary of CAN, Dr. Musa Asake, confirmed the development but called on the Borno State Government to have a rethink.

He said, “We have seen that eviction notice from the Borno State Government. We are all Nigerians and there are other places where the state government can develop. The areas being earmarked for demolition are already developed with churches and schools.

“We have enough problems at hand and we don’t want to add another one. Christians have suffered enough in Borno State. If the state government wants to destroy churches and build any housing estate, no Christian will see it as a sign of progress.”

Asake promised that CAN would take up the  matter with Borno State Government as soon as it was confirmed that the letter actually emanated from the government.

Several calls and text messages to the mobile phone of the Borno State Commissioner for Information,  Mr. Inuwa Bwala, as at 3:45 pm on Sunday for the state government’s reaction were not replied.

17 Killed as Boko Haram Attack Youth Vigilante in Borno

Naira news.

08.09.2013, 22:55  Local

At least 17 people died and 18 others seriously injured as suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a vigilante group guarding Benisheik Town, 72km west of Maiduguri, victims and government officials said.

The spokesman of the newly formed 7th Division of the Nigerian Army, Lt Col. Sagir Musa, who confirmed the attack, said six vigilante, called 'Civilian-JTF,' and five Boko Haram members died.

The terrorists attacked the town, in Kaga Local Government Area, at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.

A PREMIUM TIMES reporter who visited the Accident and Emergency, A&E, Unit of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital saw many of the injured as the 12-bed hospital unit could barely cater for the victims.

An injured Civilian-JTF member, Zannah Fannami, told journalists at the hospital that the attack took place at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
"Boko Haram gunmen, carrying sophisticated arms, opened fire on us killing 12 of our members. We were able to kill five of them and took possession of their four AK47 rifles," he said.

Another Civilian-JTF operative, Muhammed Abuwar, 32, who had injuries on his arm and leg said "the military had agreed to watch and lay in ambush with us against the Boko Haram; but when the attackers came none of them came over to assist us."

Garba Ngamdu, an adviser on labour to the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, also confirmed the attack when he visited the A&E unit of the hospital.

"We left our people back at home trying to bury the 12 dead men killed by the Boko Haram. The Civilian JTF had succeeded in killing five of the Boko Haram attackers using their machetes; three of their corpses still lie there in the outskirts of the town, while we learnt that they ran away with two others,"Mr. Ngamdu, an indigene of Kaga Local Government Area, said.

"One of the 18 injured persons brought to the hospital by local government officials died at about 4 p.m. while doctors were trying to remove bullets from sensitive parts of his body," he added.

The road leading to Benisheik, on the Kano-Maiduguri Expressway, was barricaded on Sunday by angry members of the youth vigilante who protested the killing of their colleagues thus forcing travellers to return home.

A military helicopter was seen hovering towards the direction of Benisheik.

Reacting to the incident, the Army spokesman, Mr. Musa, said "Information available to 7th Division of Nigeria Army revealed that at about 12:30am suspected members of BH terrorists deceptively attacked Youth vigilante at Benisheik headquarters of Kaga local government area of Borno state."

"Following the attack, 6 vigilante members and five Boko Haram terrorists were killed.
"Some elements of 21 Brigade troops have been drafted to the area and the attack was repelled. Troops are still combing the general area in search of fleeing terrorists.

"Further details of the matter would be made available as event unfold," he added.
Mr. Musa confirmed that "The Damaturu-Maiduguri road was barricaded by members of the vigilante at Benisheik until the troops were able to persuade them to clear the road."

PDP crisis: Jonathan tells elders to shun Obasanjo

Even before it got off the drawing board, former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s plan to lead the peace moves in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has collapsed.

The meeting of elders to resolve the party’s crises was slated for today in Abuja.

It was “technically” called off last night at the Presidency’s prompting, The Nation learnt.

President Goodluck Jonathan, it was said, advised the elders to shun the meeting, following intelligence reports that Obasanjo was behind the crises.

The former President could not be reached last night.

Among the elders expected at the meeting are former chairmen and notable leaders.

A pre-meeting session of some governors at the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge went on for hours last night.

It was not clear what was discussed, but the news about the Obasanjo mission may have been broken.

“All was well, until this evening when we learnt the President was opposed to Obasanjo presiding at the meeting,” a source said, adding: “He believes that Obasanjo is the architect of the crises; he shouldn’t be called to settle it and be seen as a peacemaker.”

The meeting slated for next Tuesday will hold. President Jonathan will preside.

Brickbats continued to fly yesterday amid shaky efforts to rescue the PDP.

A group loyal to President Jonathan also accused Obasanjo of being the architect of the crises. He should call his associates in the Kawu Baraje faction of the party to order, the Media Network for Transformation (MNT) said.

The group said Obasanjo could not continue to be the hand of Esau and the voice of Jacob at the same time.

In a statement in Abuja, signed by its Coordinator, Mr. Goodluck Ebelo, the MNT urged Obasanjo to either renounce his associates in the New PDP or be treated like those rated as rebels by the party.

The group said “no arbiter, who is the guiding light of the rebels can make peace”.

To the President’s camp, Obasanjo is the unseen hand pulling the string of crises in the ruling party. There is suspicion in the Presidency over his peace mission.

Some governors were meeting last night at the Rivers Governor’s Lodge in Abuja ahead of today’s meeting.

National Chairman Bamanga Tukur yesterday described members of the Kawu Baraje faction as “prodigal sons” who would be accepted back into the fold, if they retraced their steps.

But the Baraje faction told Tukur that his “time is up”.

The statement said: “We call on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to call his associates to order. Apart from being their sponsor, the rebel governors draw their inspiration from him.

“Apart from numerous clandestine meetings, former President Obasanjo started his public romance with the rebel flank when he became unavoidably absent at this year’s Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, but vigorously participated in the day’s activities in Dutse, Jigawa State. That was followed by the rebel governors’ visit to his Abeokuta home.

“Then came last Saturday, and Chief Obasanjo’s mischief literarily flew over the Eagle Square venue of the Special Convention. Unavoidably absent, again, he was to turn up the next day in church, at the Presidential Villa, made a few platitudinous remarks on the need for a peaceful resolution of the crisis and thereafter called a meeting . His meeting failed and will continue to fail.

“Obasanjo cannot continue to be hands of Esau and the voice of Jacob at the same time. No arbiter, who is the guiding light of the rebels, can make peace. Peace, in this matter, will continue to elude President Obasanjo because his activities are the very antithesis of the conditions precedent to peace.”

The group said it suspected that Obasanjo cannot resolve the crisis in the party with alleged partisan interest.

The statement added: “Unfortunately, his eight years in office provides no road map to resolving a political dispute. All that can be gleaned from the debris of his time in power are abuse of institutions of State in shutting down dissent, hounding political opponents into prison and forcing a party chairman to resign …. Little wonder that such baleful legacy dogs his attempt at making peace.

“President Obasanjo has to come out publicly to renounce his ties with the seven governors who are trying to impose their will on the remaining 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory or acknowledge them and be treated like them.”

President Jonathan is yet to speak on his political future, but MNT said he is free to run again. It said: “The governors are welcome to contest the PDP primaries, individually or present a candidate. That’s democracy. But for persons, who themselves, stood for elections for their second terms to demand that Mr. President cannot avail himself such amenity is not only rude but feudal.”

Obasanjo’s media aide Vitalis Ortese declined to comment on the statement credited to the group last night.

“I cannot speak on what a faceless group is saying”, he told our reporter on the telephone.

Boko Haram kills 20 in Borno

Nigeria Nation News Friday September 6th. 2013 Posted by: Our Reporter in Featured, News 10 hours ago The Boko Haram sect came back with fury yesterday, despite the serious efforts by the military to crush its insurgency. Men suspected to be members of the sect, bearing sophisticated weapons, launched attacks in Borno State, killing no fewer than 20 people. They attacked schools and hospitals, setting some houses on fire in Gajiram, headquarters of Nganzai Local Government and Bulabulin Ngawra village in Konduga Local Government Area of the beleaguered state. Nganzai is about 73 kilometres from Maiduguri, the state capital. Bullabulin Ngawra is 45 kilometres away. The local governments share boundaries with the terrorists’ major camps in Marte and the Sambisa Forests, which the military said had been destroyed since June. The terrorists reported to be about 40, were armed with Ak47 rifles. No fewer than 15 people were killed in the ambush on Gajiram. The vigilance youths also known as “civillian JTF” and military men later engaged them. The terrorists also laid ambush to the Damboa-Maiduguri road, which was reopened two weeks ago, where they were believed to have shot dead five people. “The Boko Haram sect members attacked Bullabulin Ngawra in the early hours of today (Thursday) and killed five people. I believe that they attacked us because of how our volunteers have succeeded in curtailing their atrocities in our area,” an eyewitness said. Some Maiduguri residents told reporters: “We saw two Hilux patrol vehicles of the military conveying bodies and the injured heading towards University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), but we could not ascertain whether they were victims of the latest attack in Nganzai or Bullabulin Ngawra”. It was gathered that on Wednesday, the “Civilian JTF” and the military arrested 14 terror suspects with arms and ammunition in Bulunkutu ward, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) premises and Sulimanti ward of Maiduguri metropolis. The suspects, according to sources in Maiduguri, sneaked into the hospital through the perimeter fence, before the youths sighted them with rifles and ammunition at about 10.35am on Wednesday. “The suspects disguised as injured and sick persons with rifles hidden under their flowing gowns.
